Ittoqqortoormiit is located at Scoresby Sound, the largest fjord complex in the world, as well as the world’s longest fjord. And it is also entrence point for the biggest national park, which is just north of the village.
The location is above the artic circle (70°29′18″N, 021°58′19″W) and therfor we have midnight sun (may 22nd till july 22nd) and artic winther (21st november till 22nd january). It is a small village very isolated, and mother nature sets the agenda most of the year. Winther is long, about 9 month a year the fjord is frozen, so you can travle by dogsledg or snowmobile on the ice. There are two nearby settlements at Cape Hope and Cape Tobin, these are abandond, and only used for recreation purpose.
Ittoqqortoormiit, previously known as Scoresbysund, is one of the youngest towns in Greenland, and one of the most isolated places in Greenland. The town was established in 1925, and the name Ittoqqortoormiit means “big houses”.
